Palm Sunday
Palm branches were thrown before him as a sign of welcome. People were singing and children were dancing and everyone was delighted that finally he had arrived. A great celebrity had come to say hello. Sadly, within hours the tide of warm feelings was getting very cold. Soon people did not like what he was saying – he made them think and they discovered that their welcome had not been heartfelt – they wanted a magician and they met a man willing to suffer for his message. He challenged them to think deeply about their beliefs and they shunned him and wanted to get rid of him. In a few days the palm was replaced with the thick branches of a stout tree, strong enough to hold the weight of a body. In the hours of this very special week ahead may God help us to understand and value, the love which helped him endure the whipping, the humiliation, meeting his mother’s tear-filled eyes, the nails digging into his flesh and his words – it is accomplished!
Archbishop Eamon, along with the clergy of the diocese, will celebrate the Chrism Mass on Wednesday, 17 April at 7.00pm in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh. All are welcome. In particular, an invitation to attend is extended to families and schools in the diocese with children who will make their Confirmation this year.
